Cyclic load triaxial test

This test makes it possible to simulate in the laboratory the effect of road traffic on unbound granular materials used in base and subbase layers of roads, in order to allow:

  • studies of reversible deformations, which are a useful input in thickness design calculations;
  • studies of permanent deformations, in connection with the risk of rutting.

A cylindrical test specimen is placed in a cell and subjected to a confining pressure σ3 and an axial stress σ1 = σ3 + q. The confining pressure either remains constant or varies in phase with the axial stress cycles.
