Recycling and valorization of stainless steel slag (CRAFT)

Core Tasks (1)

In the years 1999-2001, BRRC actively participated in the research project Recycling and Valorisation of Stainless Steel Slags funded by the European Union under the 4th Framework Programme for SME’s (CRAFT programme).

BRRC investigated the possibilities to use stainless steel slag – a by-product of the production of stainless steel – as a road aggregate, more particularly in mixtures such as sand cement, lean concrete or roller-compacted concrete and in asphalt pavements. The results indicated that cured stainless steel slag can be used in asphalt mixes for binder courses, whereas applications in (lean) concrete require extra care to control the possible swelling (volume instability) of the slag.
