The objective of this three-year research project, in which thirteen partners were involved, was to develop techniques to treat steel slag (both LD and EAF) right from the production stage so as to give it good characteristics and volume stability. It was completed in the year 2000 and the final report has been released.

The research demonstrated that the volume stability of steel slag (whether EAF or not) can be significantly improved by treatment. Thyssen Krupp Stahl AG in Duisburg (Germany) has an operational unit to treat steel slag with siliceous sand, resulting in the production of very high-quality aggregates. The Belgian partners focussed their research on substituting the siliceous sand by glass cullets. The results were encouraging, but indicated that this technique needed further investigation and development.
