European project INTRO (INTelligent ROads) (FEHRL)

The objective of the European project INTRO (Intelligent Roads)was to demonstrate that an efficient application of present information and communication technologies could bring “intelligence” to roads and offers unique opportunities to better manage and maintain the road network, to optimize its capacity and to make roads safer and cleaner. This three-year project was subsidized by the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Commission (General Directorate for Research).

Research was devoted to the following themes (a detailed description is given in the Bulletin CRR 76, juillet-août-septembre, 2008):

  • technologies, present experiences and practices;
  • intelligence and road safety;
  • intelligence and infrastructure management;
  • intelligence for the forecast of traffic conditions and the monitoring of road safety.

As a member of the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL), BRRC was involved in the research consortium INTRO. More specifically, BRRC wrote a repport entitled A Vision of Intelligent Roads, developing a concrete scenario and a vision of intelligent road. This vision was presented during the Safe Highways of the Future (February 2008, Brussels) and Transport Research Arena (April 2008, Ljubljana) conferences.
